Why your haircut does not look like the photo you brought

Framed photographic slides spread out on a white surface

You bring a photo. The stylist nods. Two hours later the hair looks good — but not like the photo.

This happens often, and it is usually not because anyone did anything wrong. Four things sit between a photo and your hair.

1. The colour your hair is now

Reference photos are usually hair that has already been through several processes. If your hair is naturally dark, or was dyed dark not long ago, the same colour formula will come out differently.

This is the most overlooked of the four. Before asking “can I have this colour”, the more useful question is “what is my hair’s current base”.

2. Thickness and texture

The same cut behaves differently on different hair. Thick hair expands outwards; fine hair sits flat against the head. Straight, coarse hair takes a shape less readily than soft hair does.

A stylist can compensate by removing weight internally or leaving weight at the ends, but cannot change what the strand is. The cut in the photo may have been built on a different texture entirely.

3. The shape of your head

This one is rarely mentioned and affects the result a great deal. The same length can look completely different depending on your cheekbones and jawline.

A stylist’s job is not to copy the photo exactly, but to take the idea of it and adapt it to your face. That means the result will not be an exact match, and if the adapting is done well it should sit better on you than a straight copy would.

4. The photo itself

Photos online are usually shot in professional lighting, and many have been colour-adjusted. A brown in a photo can be a couple of shades lighter than it was in the room.

They are also taken immediately after the appointment — that is, right after a professional has styled it. The next morning, when you dry it yourself, it will look different.

So should you bring photos? Yes

Photos are still far more precise than words, so it’s worth using them well:

  • Bring two or three. A single photo can be read several ways. Several photos show what you actually keep returning to.
  • Include one from behind. Most reference photos are front-facing, but the length and volume at the back decide the overall shape.
  • Say which part you like. The colour? The length? The fringe? The volume? Two people can like completely different things about the same photo.
  • Bring photos of what you do not want. This helps more than people expect — it narrows things down very quickly.

Three things worth saying out loud

  1. How many minutes you spend on your hair in the morning. A cut that needs fifteen minutes of styling does not suit someone who has five.
  2. Whether you tie your hair up regularly. If you do, there is a minimum length that has to stay.
  3. When you last bleached, straightened or permed. This decides what the hair can take.

At emo.

We spend time on this before picking up the scissors. If the photo you have brought needs a starting point your hair is not at yet, we will tell you where the gap is and how many steps it takes to get there — so you can decide at the beginning rather than at the mirror.

You can speak English, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese and Korean with us. Both Japanese and Vietnamese stylists work here, and you are welcome to request either.

Our online booking page is currently in Japanese only. If that’s a hassle, just call or message us on Zalo. We’re happy to help in English or Vietnamese.
